2025 was another crazy year. I thought life slowed down as one got older but I’m busier and busier each year. For the last 7 years I have been lucky to also live and work alongside the community in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (dtes). 2025 was a year where I had to travel to my family over the summer and then back to dtes in September. I was so happy to return to BC and so very grateful that I get to live here – In dtes and on the Sunshine Coast. I was not able to make it up to the coast from the city until almost December and there were still some great finds. And smart me, I now have insurance: I showed my mushroom interested neighbours how to identify chanterelles. And here’s the good news… they don’t like to eat mushrooms so they saved their findings for me! How welcome was that! I have the best neighbours!!

And with the universe kicking me some needed happiness, I adopted the sweetest dog, Beya Mar, in October. She was alone on the streets of Mexico City and I was lucky enough to adopt her. She arrived at the end of October and rescued me. We came to the coast at the end of November and got into the forest as soon as possible. She loved it!

So again for 2025 I am posting all the photos in this one post. From my neighbours finds to Beya Mar and my finds on Soames Hill. Hope your foraging in 2025 was wonderful.

But we had only seen them shaped like a wing and not before as trumpets. And today we did and looked at each other and then gazed in amazement. They were simply stunning. And we don’t say that every day.

We literally stumbled across these in Upper Roberts Creek.

Ta-da! Aren’t they cool?


On this last photo one can see the two different shapes: the trumpet shape on the top and the wing shape along the side of the wood.

What a sight as you walk through the forest and come across these white beauties. We don’t pick them. McDowell doesn’t eat them. But they must be good luck because right after this Balfour found some gorgeous white chanterelles and McDowell found a perfect Boletus mirabilis. Happiness all around.

 

Angel Wings  (Pleurocybella porrigens)

Angel wings or Pleurocybella porrigens is a species of fungus in the Marasmiaceae family. The species is widespread in temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere. P. porrigens, known as the angel wing, is a white-rot wood-decay fungus on conifer wood, particularly hemlock (genus Tsuga). The flesh is thin and fragile compared to the oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ssp.).

In Tofino forests Angel Wings (Pleurocybella porrigens) are plentiful and look just like – hey – angel wings or cupid wings or maybe even pegasus wings. White, white, white and while similar to oysters much more delicate. McDowell does not pick them or eat them, but many do and have not experienced any ill effect.

These beauties were seen growing in the forests of Tofino, BC Canada.
